Men in Therapy: New Approaches for Effective Treatment  (Norton, 2009) $32.00

Men in Therapy - a new book by David B. WexlerIn Men in Therapy, Dr. David Wexler illuminates the ways in which cultural norms and assumptions color the male experience of psychotherapy. He explains how the traditional notions of masculinity (the “Guy Code”) keep men away from the therapist’s office and inhibit men trying to benefit from counseling and therapy. In this ground-breaking book, therapists are offered a rich understanding of these issues and even richer set of guidelines and strategies for engaging men in new and creative ways.

Men enter the world of counseling due to a wide range of needs and come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and they do not always show up voluntarily. Individual chapters are devoted to the treatment of men in relationships, men suffering from depression, fathers, men who abuse women, and men of color. Wexler provides a fresh perspective on the issues unique to each group, plus sound advice and commonsense methods for treating each of these groups effectively, nonjudgmentally, and professionally. He draws on contemporary research, his 25 years of extensive clinical experience, and his own experience of therapy as a man, to equip the therapist with the knowledge and confidence necessary to provide effective therapy to men.

STOP Domestic Violence: Innovative Skills, Techniques,
Options and Plans for Better Relationships
(Norton, 2006)
English version  –  professional book
$32.00

STOP Domestic Violence - by David B. WexlerA revision of the highly successful Domestic Violence 2000, this comprehensive treatment program for domestic violence offenders is an all-in-one manual for therapists, social workers, and other counselors. The manual teaches group leaders how to effectively and successfully administer Wexler’s well-regarded program by integrating cognitive behavioral skills and a client-centered, skill-building approach that emphasizes respect for the abuser himself.

Treatment providers will find the open-ended 26-week psychoeducational treatment model — packed with specific skills-training exercises, handouts, and homework — easily adaptable to different settings. Its structured interventions, clear guidelines, and philosophical orientation are neatly presented in five sections: foundations, special program sessions, group sessions: self-management, group sessions: relationship skills, and standard forms. The accompanying workbook and CD-ROM are invaluable take-home resources for the group members, fully engaging the abusive male in his own education and healing process. NEW!  Healing From Violence: Latino Men's Journey to a New Masculinity (hardcover)
by Christauria Welland, PsyD, & Neil Ribner, PhD
$40.00

Sin Golpes: Transformar la Respuesta Violenta de los Hombres en la Pareja y la FamiliaLatinos are the fastest growing minority population in the United States. One area that remains largely unexplored is domestic violence within Latino families. Although it appears that such violence occurs as frequently in Latino families than in Caucasian families, little research has been done on this topic and very few counseling programs explicitly developed for Latino families currently exist. This book fills this void. Based on a research study of 150 Latino men who completed a year of court-ordered treatment in Southern California, and a four-year pilot study, the book mixes quantitative and qualitative methodology in order to provide counselors with an opportunity to hear first-hand how Latino men think about manhood, marriage, and family life. Healing from Violence uses in-depth portraits, to guide counselors in tailoring treatment plans to the needs of Latino men.

Sin Golpes: Transformar la Respuesta Violenta de los Hombres en la Pareja y la FamiliaThis new Spanish edition is much more than a translation

  • An introduction to the Spanish edition, including cultural guidelines on methodology for Latino offenders and therapeutic strategies that are likely to be effective for Latinos.
  • The use of simple vocabulary, with definitions of words that many group members may not have heard.

The eight sections are presented from the perspective of Latino clients:
Foundations, brief interventions, self-management, human rights, parent education, relationship skills, spirituality and prevention, and relapse prevention.

WexlerThis book describes an innovative treatment program for troubled adolescents that addresses central problems of the "self," integrating self-psychology, cognitive-behavior therapy, and neo-Ericksonian interventions. The problems of substance abuse, anxiety, aggression, self-destructive behavior, eating disorder, and mood swings can usually be traced to fundamental deficits, particularly in the ability to self-soothe.
